The tour starts from the Unesco site of Matera rich in art and history and ideal for urban trekking. You will explore the Park of the Rupestrian Churches, with its Gravina Canyon and Mediterranean scrub, on the path of prehistoric caves, Neolithic villages and rock hamlets with frescoed churches.
The adventure will continue in the Gallipoli Cognato Park, with its marvelous grassy plateau from where you can admire the wild landscapes of the Lucanian Dolomites, with the lovely villages of Pietrapertosa and Castelmezzano.
The unspoiled trails, the vibrant lights and breathtaking panoramas will leave you with an enchanting memory of Basilicata region and its nature.

Day 1
Sassi of Matera
Independent arrival in Matera. Accommodation in hotel or B&B. At 16h urban trekking in the Sassi districts* (UNESCO heritage site) and the old town: the baroque city, the Romanesque churches and the rupestrian civilization (duration: 3 hours). Dinner in a local restaurant in the Sassi. Overnight in Matera.
*if for personal circumstances it is not possible to arrive to Matera in time for the tour, on request this can be postponed to the next day and done together with the hike in the cave churches park

Day 2
Murgia and the Rock Churches
Hike on the Murgia to explore the archaeological and naturalistic treasures of the Park of the Rupestrian Churches. You will cross the Gravina of Matera, with its beautiful panoramic views and unique paths. Packed lunch in the caves. Free afternoon in town.

Day 3
Lucanian Dolomites
Transfer to Pietrapertosa (90 minutes), in the Gallipoli Cognato and Lucan Dolomites Park. Check in at the B&B, quick stop at a local shop to buy something for a picnic along the way, departure for the hike. From the Saracen fortress of Pietrapertosa that offers a superb panoramic view of the Basento valley, you will visit the old town and the cherished Mother Church. Taking the path that goes down to the Caperrino stream, you will cross an old bridge, dominated by the steep Dolomites of Pietrapertosa and hiking through old shepherds’ trails toward Castelmezzano. Tour of the old town and picnic at the castle. Return to Pietrapertosa following the same route. Overnight in Pietrapertosa.

Day 4
On the Ridge
From Pietrapertosa (1052 m) you will dive into a holly wood. You will go down to the Della Rossa stream and then up to the Costa La Rossa ridge (1026 m).
From there towards “Monte dell’Impiso” (1295 m) you will hike enjoying a stunning view over the peaks of the park. Return to the village along a path on the ridge. Overnight in Pietrapertosa.

Day 5
Breakfast and transfer to Matera. End of services.
