An easy trekking of 4 days and 3 nights between the Sassi of Matera and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches. You will set out to find prehistoric caves, neolithic villages and rock hamlets with frescoed churches, along the Gravina and on the Murgia.

Day 1

The Sassi of Matera

Independent arrival in Matera. Accommodation in hotel or B&B. At 16h urban trekking in the Sassi districts* (UNESCO heritage site) and the old town: the baroque city, the Romanesque churches and the rupestrian civilization (duration: 3 hours). Dinner in a local restaurant in the Sassi. Overnight in Matera.

*if for personal circumstances it is not possible to arrive to Matera in time for the tour, on request this can be postponed to the next day and done together with the hike in the cave churches park

Day 2

The Murgia and the Rupestrian Churches

A walk on the Murgia, in search of the archaeological and naturalistic treasures of the Park of the Rupestrian Churches. You will cross the Gravina of Matera, with its beautiful panoramic views and unique paths. Packed lunch in the caves. Free afternoon in town.

Day 3

Montescaglioso, Madonna della Loe, The Monks Park

Short transfer by bus line to Montescaglioso and tour of the old town with the ancient Abbey of S. Michele Arcangelo (XII century). Walking out of Sant’Angelo door you will proceed downhill toward the old abandoned station, among the olive trees then you will reach the rock church of Madonna della Loe, on the edge of the Gravina. Once you have reached Selva Venusio farm, your trekking will come to an end around the grancia of the Monks Park, where it is possible to take again the bus from Montescaglioso to Matera. Free time and overnight stay.
