Starting from the Matera city tour, rich in art but also ideal for urban trekking, then you will get to the Park of the Rupestrian Churches, with its Gravina and Mediterranean scrub, in search of prehistoric caves, neolithic villages and rock hamlets with frescoed churches.

The adventure will continue in the Gallipoli Cognato Park, with its marvellous grassy plateaux from where you can admire the wild faces of the Lucan Dolomites, with the small villages of Pietrapertosa and Castelmezzano. The unpolluted nature, the strong light and panoramas will leave you an enchanting memory of Basilicata to explore on foot.

Day 1

The Sassi of Matera

Independent arrival in Matera. Accommodation in hotel or B&B and urban trekking in the Sassi districts (UNESCO heritage) and the old town: the baroque city, the Romanesque churches and the rupestrian civilization (duration: 3 hours). Dinner in a local restaurant in the Sassi. Overnight stay.

Day 2

The Murgia and the Rock Churches

A walk on the Murgia, in search of the archaeological and naturalistic treasures of the Park of the Rupestrian Churches. You will cross the Gravina of Matera, with its beautiful panoramic views and unique paths. Packed lunch in the caves. Free afternoon in town.

Day 3

The Lucan Dolomites

Transfer to Pietrapertosa (90 minutes), in the Gallipoli Cognato and Lucan Dolomites Park. Accommodation in B&B and departure for the hike. From the Saracen fortress of Pietrapertosa, almost completely dug into the rock, that offers a super panoramic view of the Basento valley, you will visit the old town with its many steps and the valuable Mother Church. At the foot of the castle there is a path that goes down to the Caperrino stream, then you will cross an old bridge, dominated by the steep Dolomites of Pietrapertosa and, finally, you will climb to Castelmezzano. Tour of the old town and picnic on the castle. Return to Pietrapertosa following the same itinerary. Overnight stay.

Day 4

On the Ridge

From Pietrapertosa (1052 m) you will dive into a holly wood. You will go down to the Della Rossa stream and then up to the Costa La Rossa ridge (1026 m) from where you will enjoy the panoramic view over all the peaks of the park. Surrounded by vegetation, you will proceed towards “Monte dell’Impiso”, at an altitude of 1295 m. Return to the village along a path on the ridge. Overnight stay.

Day 5

Breakfast and transfer to Potenza or Matera. End of services.

Possibility of extending the tour with excursions in the Pollino National Park and in Maratea, or other itineraries in the region.
